In a nursery there are many different factors that can affect communication, some are environmental which include things such as; the setting, noise, seating, light, space and time.

- Setting;

The setting can affect communication because in a nursery there is always a lot happening at once for example if there are children running around making a lot of noise this can make it hard for a child to speak to the staff member as they could be preoccupied watching what the children running around are doing.

- Noise levels;

The noise levels can affect communication because in a nursery the children are normally doing different things at different times for example some children could be having song time and one child could be trying to tell the staff member that they are hurt but cannot be heard over the singing or the child could be misheard.

- Seating;

Seating can affect communication because when the children sit at the table for lunch they may have to sit next to someone they do not like or they may refuse to sit next to someone they don’t like meaning that they are not communicating with everyone or may exclude themselves from the conversation that is going on.

Another example is when staff are having a meeting with parents seating can also affect communication if the only chairs they have are the little ones people may not be able to sit on them or may be very low to the ground and uncomfortable meaning that they won’t focus on the conversation that is happening.

- Lighting

Lighting can affect communication in a nursery because if there is a deaf child and they need the staff member to sign to them if the lighting is not correct they may not be able to see what they are signing or get00 it wrong.

- Space

The amount of space can affect communication because in a nursery if they are having all the parents in for a progress evening and they are all cramped in one small room this can mean that people that are trying to speak may feel uncomfortable. This could mean that they are unable to think properly as they are too busy trying to make themselves comfortable.

Another example is when the children are playing or having a group activity there may not be enough space for every child to join in meaning that some children may not be able to communicate with everyone and some may be left out

- Timing

Time can affect communication because if a parent is rushing when dropping off their child because they are late to work the parent and the staff member may not have time to communicate any information that may possibly be important for example if they child needs medicine at a certain time and the parent has forgotten to tell the staff member the child
