Unit 2- equality, diversity and rights
Marginalisation- treating a person or group insignificantly
- People who have been marginalised might have health care or education or social care.
Disempowerment
The effects of discrimination
- Low self esteem, low self worth and lack of self identity
- Restricted opportunities – this could lead to a person or group of people not gaining employment or receiving the same type of health care as everyone else.
- Aggression and criminality- people and groups that experience discrimination can retaliate- people who live in poverty and have restricted opportunity can turn to criminality in order to gain money.

- You get to know different people and different personalities
- Makes you more open minded
- Food and drink
- Fashion / different fashion and cultures
- Education / knowledge – people bringing their expertise
- Employment and expertise
- Culture
Diversity in society is about differences such as:
- Gender and sexuality
- Disability and learning needs
- Race and ethnicity
- Age and health status
- Culture and place of origin
- Religions, values and beliefs
- Social class and family structure
- Appearance
Diversity in health and social care is about respecting different things
Respecting differences is about tolerance, social cohesion, and cultural enrichment
Why is it important we have knowledge of these as a health and social care worker?

- Education/knowledge
- Employment and expertise – we have to understand the workers will bring different expertise.
How do we ensure we treat people equally and protect their right?

Care Value Base (David Seedhouse, 1998) -if you follow the seven step ...you will definitely will be meeting their need. If you miss one step you will no be respecting diversity and equality – if you follow the principle you will be ensuring equality care
