In 336 BCE, Alexander III of Macedon, more widely known as Alexander the Great, came into power after his father, Philip II of Macedon, was assassinated. He conquered a vast region of land stretching from Macedonia, down to Egypt, and east all the way to a bit of India. He was a military genius in battle, defeating his opponents with clever and cunning tactics. He gave religious freedom to his people, and those who he conquered during his siege across the Europe, the Middle East, and India. With his siege, he also adapted customs and religion to his own culture, creating Hellenism. He even went through the troubles his troops did, experiencing the hardships that came to them the same as to came to him, even though he was above them rank-wise.

Alexander is deserving of the title “the great” because of his incredible tactics to win many battles against his opponents, using extremely clever ways to overcome the opposing army. For example, on his conquest of India, Alexander was stuck at a halt, a river had separated his army from the Indian army, using elephants as their mounts and led by Porus, a great warrior-king of India. Every night, Alexander would send his troops to a part of the river and create lots of noise to get Porus’ attention. Porus took his army and went to the site of the noise. Alexander continued doing this until Porus stopped reacting to the noise. Alexander used this as his chance to attack. So he crossed the river without interruption of the Indian army coming to the noise, which Porus thought was just a trick to get him to move once again (Document B). He also never lost a battle in all 11 years of his conquests (Outside Info)

Alexander III is deserving of the name “the great” because he gave religious freedom to those he conquered. Alexander was a very religious person, as seen in the story of the Hat Band (Document D). It has been said that Alexander’s head band that wrapped around his hat blew off. A soldier went to get it, but placed it on his head so it would not get wet as he swam back.
