Anne Hutchinson
According to Puritan belief, Anne Hutchinson was guilty of something. Hutchinson held meetings in her home and displayed strong spiritual convictions that were against Puritan Clergy beliefs. Her strong willed, charismatic personality gained many followers and this threatened the Puritan Clergy. Governor John Winthrop charged Hutchinson with being guilty of sedition. In addition to being charged with sedition, she was accused of breaking the 5th commandment: honor thy father and mother. Governor Winthrop, among others, viewed this commandment in relation with authority; if one was not honoring their authority, it was no different than the lack of honor toward one’s father and mother.
The fact that Hutchinson was a woman did not help matters. A Puritan rule was that women should not be leaders. Hutchinson has progressive ideas regarding the equality and rights of women and these ideas contradicted Puritan Theology. In today’s society, some still believe women should not be leaders. Even in some Christianity beliefs, it states women should not lead the church. While this may be biblical and I do claim to be a Christian, I find myself questioning this particular belief. In my opinion, if God’s Word is being delivered correctly, what should it matter the gender of the deliverer.
