Appex Corp?
Shikhar worked as a partner in the Boston Consulting Group, which is well
established firm with the legacy of over 30 years. It was a very formal
organization. While Appex was startup like firm where employees had more
autonomy. The company structure was very informal. Less control power was
given to the managers and there were no clear job descriptions for the
employees. Company lacked the long term vision, on where they wanted to
go and how would they like to be positioned.
Other issue was on the customer front. Having operations in technology space,
customer service was something that might have been the differentiating
factor to have the edge over competition. But there was no particular
department or employee role pertaining to the task. Which led to poor
customer services. Everyone was running on their own times and this was
leading to missed deadlines and losing out on deals. The company was
working on a business model in which the higher demand led to hiring more
employees. These employees were not given specific targets and strict job
descriptions, these inefficiencies led to higher costs. Hence Appex was not
able to meet the high demand from customers.
So, very early in his tenure, Ghosh realized that company needed control and
structure. Appex needed to address both long term planning and short term
focus on employee career path, defined areas of responsibility, a system of
