Corruption
A great statesman once quoted, “There is sufficiency for man’s need but not for man’s greed. ” It is on this premise that I would like to talk to you about man’s greed in the government: Corruption.
Corruption means the improper use of the government resources for personal gain, or the allocation of government funds with vested interest. Boiled down to its essence; corruption is stealing not only to the government but more so on the citizens of country, denying the people of their right to quality services offered by the government
In the Philippines setting, corruption is rampant both in the national and local level. We can see many shady dealings with our own local politician and hushed murmurs of under the table agreement National government is also plague with this “curse”, as revealed by the media, both of foreign and local origin. A day would not pass when the TV would not deliver cases where people are denied of their privileges because the higher-up’s greediness cannot be satisfied. We can also hear various accidents of government projects that collapse easily because of the case of substandard materials, that was reported in astounding value. This cases of misuse of government funds has become so invasive that it became a deadly disease slowly eating away on the lifeblood of our economy.
Globally, we can say that corruption is not just a “Philippines-only” disease. Rather , many countries , from first-world countries to the third world countries are affected with this abnormal level of selfishness. Many countries are suffering from the misappropriation of public funds that are able to find their way into the hearts of men.
Jose Rizal, our national hero, in his book “El Filibusterismo” implicitly stated that “corrupt officials are a divine punishment of the almighty for the wicked ways of his people.”It is in these lines that I urge not only every individual but every family to instill and fortify moral values to its citizenry. If we love the country as a whole, we would not be tempted to steal anything because everyone is part of a bigger family; our community or rather, the Filipino nation.
