Hong Kong Opportunities

Hong Kong is an emerging country for the technology industry. Years ago, corporations in Hong Kong went to great lengths to associate themselves with China instead of Hong Kong. Since Hong Kong did not have a lot of technology talent and growth opportunities, most of their talent left for China. As a result, the Hong Kong government intervened and spent millions of dollars to create Cyberport, which is a modern technology campus with state of the art equipment (Denlinger, 2010). While this campus remained half empty for years, the tides have turned and now it is a robust campus with students gaining confidence about becoming a Hong Kong technology professional.

As Denlinger (2010) explains, several circumstances provide positive opportunities for Hong Kong in the technology field. Software development for mobile apps is a growing field since Hong Kongers are early adopters of new mobile technology. Even though wages and basic costs are higher than China, these services are still affordable in Hong Kong. Break even points are much lower than they were several years ago and most small firms don't require venture capital financing anymore.

Due to the high population density in Hong Kong, universal wireless and broadband services are very fast. Also, websites are not censored as in China and Facebook and Twitter are freely accessible. Facebook is very popular in Hong Kong and there are growth opportunities for Facebook gaming and apps (Denlinger, 2010).

Due to the censorship issues in China, doing business as a western company in China is difficult. As Denlinger (2010) shares, Google, Yahoo! and eBay all recently shut down their operations in China and directed them to Hong Kong. This provides great opportunities for Hong Kong to excel in this area.
