Intro to Policing

The traditional model of law enforcement the police officer would respond when a

call came in that a crime occurred. Once the officer responded to the crime, the officer

would then take a report and hand the investigation off to a detective. At this point, the

officer would go back to his patrol car and wait for another call to come in that a crime

had occurred. The officer has little interaction with the citizens within a community and

can end up responding to crimes at various points in the city. The officer does not

know hardly anyone in the areas where he is responding nor do the citizens really know

the officers. Also under this type of policing, there is nothing in place to try to prevent

crime from occurring. It is just a supply and demand sort of policing system.

Integrated patrol is that the police department all works together. The patrol

officer doesn't just respond to the call and then hand it off to the investigators they also

follow through on some of the investigation part of the job. The patrol officer has a lot

more responsibility but also helps take some of the pressure off the investigation unit to

solve all the crimes. Integrated patrol is just a better form of teamwork. Each part of the

police department coming together and helping do a little of each others job. The

combination of traditional law enforcement with a comprehensive community-based

orientation, law enforcement agencies can unleash officers' full creative power to

combat crime.

Resistance will most likely occur in two areas. The first is Sam Skeptic, the

captain of the Investigators. He is very protective of the investigation department and

might be resistant to beat cops doing more of the investigation part of the job. The other

area there might be some resistance is with Peter Perhaps, the captain of the Patrol
