Master's Prepared Nurse Interview

Introduction

The purpose of the interview in this paper is to gain knowledge from a Master’s prepared nurse about the benefits of furthering education. Learning from a Master’s prepared nurse, or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) will help the interviewer gain an understanding of the requirements of an MSN program as well as opportunities for career advancement. The goal of the interview is to gain the insight of the interviewers thoughts on the MSN role and to develop an understanding of the MSN in practice.

Overview of Career

J.K. Long (personal communication, July 15, 2016) stated that she has been a nurse for sixteen years. She started her nursing career after receiving her Associate's degree in Nursing from Montgomery Community College in Maryland. In 2012 she decided to attend Chamberlin College online to obtain her Bachelor's degree in Nursing, graduation occurred in 2013. J.K worked in telemetry from the start and continued to work there. Because she lost a child during this time and was the one who found him, she chooses not to participate in the chest compressions of her patients. Although she always makes sure that someone is there to start them, and she returns to speak with the physician in charge. She had lost this child before she made the decision to move forward with her education.

Graduate Education

In 2015 J.K. decided to return to college to get her Masters Degree and chose to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). " Nurse Practitioners are Registered Nurses who serve as primary and specialty health care providers under a physician." ("Family Nurse," n.d.). NP's can also run their own practices and are the sole providers for their patients. Her decision to pursue this degree was based on her need for knowledge; she loves to learn and wanted to be able to do more with her patients and help more people. The pay increase is also another reason, but she mentioned that even if she never accepted an NP job, she was happy with her decision because of the knowledge she gained. The college she chose was Walden University using their online program. However, the clinical portion was completed locally. The best advice given was always to remain humble, and that no knowledge is wasted. Dedication is required to complete the program with a good outcome.

Present Position

J.K currently has an NP position in the Emergency Department/Observation at a local hospital. In this position, she admits the patients who need further observation and testing to the Observation unit. On this unit the patients have the testing done and then the decision
