Nurse Interview
When assigned to interview a nurse, immediately in mind was Beth Ann Paradise. Beth Ann started her health care journey, prior to graduating from high school and during breaks while in nursing school, as a habilitation assistant at Hattie Larhlam. It was this first and challenging environment that set the foundation of strength and commitment that exudes from her today.
Beth Ann graduated with a BSN from Penn State in 2002 with the thought that she would work in women's health and later become a nurse midwife. She chuckles at this, and begins to describe how she is nowhere near what or where she thought she would be. With this, she interrupts and states, "…nursing is an amazing profession, you can do anything you choose to do…there is so much variety." Beth Ann has since obtained her MSN from Kent State.
As a junior at Penn State, Beth Ann accepted a job during break as a Nurse Technician at Akron General Hospital. She accepted her first nursing position at Akron General as a staff nurse on a Medical/surgical floor on night shift. During her staff nurse tenure, she continued to develop her skills but was also awarded the privilege of acting as a preceptor for new nurses and also acted as charge nurse. She reflects now, and states that at this point, she was destined to go into management and education; although she did not know it at the time. Over the next five years, 2005 – 2010, she transitioned to Clinical Manager where she split her time between client care, management and mentoring and developing new nurses. She gained skills in scheduling, quality assurance and daily operations. From there, she became the Head Nurse Manager of a medical oncology floor at University Hospitals. After gaining additional technical and management skills she accepted her current position as Director of Nursing and Patient Services on a medical floor at Akron General Hospital. Ironically, this is the floor where she started as a new nurse.
