Motivation is the psychological processes that arouse and direct goal-directed behavior (Kinicki). According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, this is the driving force that helps people achieve goals. Motivation can be intrinsic or extrinsic and is inferred from an individual’s behavior. The process of motivation must be understood by the manger if they are to guide employees in achieving their objective goals (Kinicki).
Employee motivation is a major event in the work place. Salary is enough to keep employees working for a company. However this may not be enough for an employee to stay at a company. It is very important to keep the morale and to keep employees feeling appreciated. Companies lacking this may often have unsatisfied employees and they may not even know it. “If no motivation is present in an employee, then that employee’s quality of work or all work in general will deteriorate” (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).
According to Kinicki
There are five reasons why you as a manager will find knowledge of motivation
important. In order of importance, you want to motivate people to join your
organization. A manager needs to instill in talented prospective workers the desire to come to work. A manager should want to motivate people to stay with your organization. A company should want to retain good people whether in good economic times or bad. Absenteeism and lateness are not expected in most organizations. Employees must show up for work at their organizations. Employees should want to perform better for their organization. Employees should want to give their organization high productivity. The bare performance is not acceptable. Employees should perform extra tasks above and beyond.
Motivation driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task is considered to be intrinsic motivation. “An intrinsic reward is the satisfaction, such as a feeling of accomplishment; a person receives from performing the particular task itself. An intrinsic reward is an internal award; the payoff comes from pleasing yourself” (Kinicki). This type of motivation focuses on a person rewarding themselves inwardly. Intrinsic motivation can be increased if the individual is given the tools needed for success or given rewards based on performance. Verbal and non-verbal praise can increase motivation. To build motivation realistic performance goals should be set (Psychology Campus).
“An extrinsic reward is the payoff, such as money, a person receives from others for performing a particular task itself. An extrinsic reward is an external reward; the payoff comes from pleasing others” (Kinicki). According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, competition serves as extrinsic motivation. The performer is encouraged to win and beat others.
