Perspectives in Hospitality
As I entered the lobby of the W Hotel I noticed the furnishing was simply beautiful. The decorator who had chosen the amazing pieces did a fantastic job. The distinctive aroma of the W Hotel scent followed me from the elevators to the roof top where the night parties are located. What I found interesting about this Hotel is that they seemed to be very family oriented. As each group maneuvered about the halls of the hotel, the staff that was chosen to direct us would make friendly jokes towards each other. Not only did they have pictures of each staff along the walls of the back of the house posing in a 14 x 16 frame with a courageous comment to go underneath but they also a had jokingly comment everywhere. For instance, as my group entered the finance and marketing department, I noticed that each cubical was covered with a fancy brown curtain and two employees taped comments stating “Feel free to come in” and “This is a drama free zone enter at your own risk”. Intangible things like that makes an employee feel at home. The aspect of the field that I didn’t like was that it seemed to be a little unorganized. At times we would bump into other groups and it felt like they was only showing us their own job interest. For instance, my tour guide job title was Catering Sales Manager and that’s basically what she talked about. As we walked passed another group, they was getting information about hotel insurance and I am pretty sure his title was along those lines. I feel that the information that we had received should have been a little broader so that we can get more information about the hotel.
At this point in my life, I wouldn’t consider working at the site we visited. I say that because I am focused on my education and feel that a job and school wouldn’t work out for me at this moment. Working at a hotel entails a lot of long hours with a non-flexible schedule.
