Administrative Interview
In this document, I write about an interview I held with a Shift Nursing Supervisor, Gerri McDonald, from the Wesley Village Skilled Nursing Facility. We discussed various aspects of her decision-making related to residents, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Registered Nurses (RN), and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA). We also discussed the Code of Ethics, Mission Statement, Vision Statement, and Values of the facility. Wesley Village Campus is affiliated with United Methodist Homes.
Organizational Expectations
United Methodist Homes’ mission is to “deliver exceptional care within a full continuum of services designed to promote wellness, and foster mutual respect and dignity while enhancing the lives of their residents. The facility provides a wide variety of options for a full continuum of care which includes independent living, personal care, and skilled nursing that features a physical therapy unit and specialized dementia care unit. The vision of the facility is to provide a choice of lifestyle options for the residents” (United Methodist Homes, 2013).
Ms. McDonald stated, “The core values are concern and understanding for the whole person; focus on education and wellness in pursuit of a full life; independence, dignity, and sense of control for all residents; and caring and compassion from their staff" (personal communication, April 13, 2016). With these values in mind, she tries to ensure that the residents in her care are treated with respect and compassion. Her staff has responsibilities that coincide with the proper care and attention that each resident deserves.
According to McDonald (personal communication, April 13, 2016), many residents have family that visits them and because of this, there are many rules that must be followed to protect the patient. Family members are asked to follow certain protocol regarding bringing food and snacks which are by orders from their physician and nutritionist. Some family members do not realize the importance of the resident's dietary restrictions. Ms. McDonald has to keep all staff informed of the protocol on food items brought in by family; this may seem like a trivial issue, but it can compromise the individual's health.
On occasion, McDonald has been approached while in the community by an individual inquiring about a person whom they may know. McDonald stated, "I have to remain true to the Code of Ethics and answer their question tactfully. I usually respond to the question by saying that the person's name does not sound familiar to me." (personal communication, April 13, 2016). Because of confidentiality, she cannot state whether the person is a resident at the facility where she works.
Ms. McDonald also spoke to me about her responsibilities in a supervisory position. These responsibilities are as follows:
