Module 16: Gagne's Conditions of Learning
- Specified several different types or levels of learning.
- Different internal and external conditions are needed for each type of learning.
Gagne's principles
1. Different instruction is required for different learning outcomes.
- Gagne's named five categories of learning:
1. Verbal information
2. Intellectual skills
3. Cognitive strategies
4. Motor skills
5. Attitudes
Category of learning Example of learning outcome Conditions of learning
1. Verbal information Stating previously learned materials such as facts, concepts, principles, and procedures.
Example: listening the 14 learner-centered psychological principles. 1. draw attention to distinctive features by variations in print or speech.

4. provide cues for effective recall and generalization of information.
2. Intellectual skills Discriminations: distinguishing objects, features, or symbols,
Example: distinguishing an even and an odd number
Concrete concept: identifying classes of concrete objects, features, or events
Examples: picking out all the red beads from a bowl of beads
Defined concepts: classifying new examples of events or ideas by their definition
Example: noting "she sells sea shells " as alliteration
Rules: applying a single relationship to solve a class of problems
Example: computing average monthly of a company
Order rules: applying a new combination of rules to solve a complex problem
Example: generating a balanced budget for a school organization
