Is there a Leader in You?
Leadership is a highly complex and elusive trait, which involves various dimensions and attributes. It requires strong communication, charisma, vision, courage, decisiveness, etc. These traits help the leader in the process of social influence in which to receive support from other to accomplish different goals in the company or society. After having obtained the course information and by listening to the real-life experiences of successful leaders such as Dr. Shavers, I realized that although I possess some leadership skills and abilities, I still have a long way to grow and attain many more characteristics of a strong leader.
I intend to develop and have better understanding of my shortcoming, in order to start making changes towards improvement of my leadership traits and skills. My newfound knowledge has allowed me to reflect and strategize my attention to my weakness areas, in order to make changes that will help me become a better leader for my future career and goal. This course has allowed me the opportunity to determine where I stand on the leadership spectrum and become acutely aware of my skills, values and attitude.
My greatest challenge lies in my dominance and self-confidence traits of leadership skill. I notice that I have become increasingly uncomfortable in a large group setting, as I do not feel the confidence to voice my opinion and confront a troubling issue. At this type of setting, I usually let other people to have control and surgency and I automatically become a follower. This lack of self-confidence in turn, has negatively affected my motivation to advance my leadership skills, specifically my communication and openness. I tend to avoid large group and teams when communication and idea sharing is not required. This leads me to re-evaluate myself and to look into long-term development plan that can aid me in changing these inadequacies, so that I can become a better contributor and perhaps even step up as more of an influential and dominance leader opposed to transactional one.
I plan to begin this effort with the help of my short-term goals are to make a deliberate strive to become more involved in larger team settings as well as investigating developmental programs and workshops such as Toastmasters, in order to improve my flailing public speaking skills. By advancing my communication skill, I would have improved upon my confidence and assertiveness levels. Toastmasters or other leadership workshops can be a successful stepping-stone in my career. Strengthening my leadership values is essential to leading a significant upward spiral.
To expand my strategies I reside by setting the long-term goal of finding a career that challenges and inspires me. Working, as a freelance artist tends to create more of isolation since majority of time I need to work from home. I lack the experience
