ObamaCare
Obama’s health care plan was already part of his program as a candidate for the American elections. This reform is the result of many hears of discussions from both political parties and the American health care industry. On December 24, 2009, the Senate passed Obama’s health care bill to extend health insurance to 30 million more Americans. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or “ObamaCare” represents the most significant change of the U.S. healthcare system since President Johnsons’ Medicare and Medicaid in 1965.
“ObamaCare” was shaped to provide more Americans an access to affordable health insurance, improving the quality of health care and health insurance, regulating the health insurance industry, and reducing health care spending in the US.
The program was organized on a redistribution system among American citizens, while some will pay more (those with higher income), others will have a free or low-cost access to health insurance. In general, everyone will benefit of a better quality health expenses coverage.
The Affordable Care Act is composed with different improvements:
Before “ObamaCare”, health insurance companies could charge people more or even deny coverage, exclude the insured from some benefits after determining that people have life-threatening lifestyle or chronic health conditions. Now, no insurer can charge the insured more or deny coverage based on health conditions.
Furthermore, while some big companies offered to their employees wealth programs for no additional cost, most others (insurred and not insurred) saw their preventive care cost increasing on the detriment of public health. Now, all health plans must include preventive services and treatments for adults and children for no additional costs.
