P2 & P3:
Humanism:
The humanism approach can be used in both health and social care. This approach is used in social care because it is used to plan care for individuals and helps care workers to know what support the individuals need. This approach is all about person centred planning (PCP) and using this approach, social care workers can plan individuals care around them. Humanists believe that care should be patient and non-judgemental and that all care needs to be person centred rather than based on what the service can provide. Person centred planning is underpinned by Humanism. Humanism and person centred planning helps a person to self-actualise. By starting at the bottom of the pyramid of needs social care helps to fulfil a person’s basic needs. The basic needs of a person can be fulfilled by social care services because a person cannot self-actualise until their basic needs have been met. By having food, water and being healthy, a person can start to work up the pyramid of needs. Safety needs are fulfilled by social care because the person will feel safe if they are being watched over by social workers or having regular check-ups. Within the social care sector, a person can be referred to counsellors who can help the person with their next step in the pyramid, self-esteem. Self-esteem can be gained through therapy or counselling.
Humanism also works in health care because health services can use the pyramid of needs to keep the care person centred. Health professionals work at the lower levels of the pyramid to provide the person with their basic needs and make them well. Only when these basic needs are met can a person work up to the higher levels. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) say that all nurses should provide person centred care to all their patients, they also say that they should focus on giving each patient respect, dignity and compassion. Humanism also helps nurses to treat their patients with respect in line with their human rights. Health professionals use humanism because they can use the pyramid of needs to give care and when they need to, they can refer patients to other health services.
Cognitive:
The cognitive approach works in social care because it opened up a whole new insight for education. The education system which is in place in the UK is influenced by Piaget. Piaget decided that development works in stages and based on this, the education system provides the resources that children need at each age. This is why, in schools, children are separated into Key Stages. These are the groups which the years at school are put into. Each stage is focusing on what Piaget said that the children should be learning and based around what they should know and be able to do at each stage.
This approach also works in health care because health professionals can use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
