PS2200-Criminal Investigations
U02a1:investigating the Crime Scene
Professor: Lou Battle
Crime Scene Investigations, in order to be accurate, begin immediately at the site where the offense was committed. The area is "taped off " and access becomes limited in order to avoid contamination of vital physical proofs that may lead police to the criminal. The size of the location to be secured differs with every case and the procedures of investigation tend to vary by a case to case basis.
The investigator questions witnesses, collects information from the police officer on scene and collects reports from all other investigating. The investigator will convey the findings to the prosecutor and share the available photographs and information in order to determine, by involvement of the law, which charges will be imposed on the criminals once apprehended.
In the case of the nanny, she was in her home. Photographs have been taken of how the body was found and how the victim was found post mortem. Her clothing will be removed and the stain will be analyzed using solution to get enzyme readings and possibly get a DNA reading, as investigators believe it to be a bodily fluid. There really are a lot of dead ends in this case for the initial investigation. The evidence that we have is mainly her clothing, hopefully with a possible struggle, we are hoping that there are positive prints, she was strangled, so maybe thru chemical tests of the skin we can get some positive prints off her neckline and with signs of a struggle maybe there is skin tissue of the perpetrator under her fingernails. we are going to vacuum all the floor surfaces in areas of the home hopefully to find trace evidence, possibly someone was in the kitchen and maybe something was removed there so there will be a detailed scan of the kitchen and struggle areas
