Identifying & Managing Project Work Using Best Practices – Creating a WBS.
The whole case was about eBooks and the revolutions in the printing industry. The case discussed about the CSU central book publishing company which is a successful bit still not able to deliver the customized eBooks to their customer which is a university. The main problem was in the management system of that printing company. Shift supervisor are not able to assign the work for the employees as many of the employers are on part time and working in the different shifts so it’s difficult for them to understand the tasks. Publishing or printing eBook is a complex process and as it is a customized eBook as per professors requested. There are several approvals, permissions and production steps involved. The timing of getting order from the university/professor was quite unpredictable as some of them want it on urgently while the others are way large than the CSU expected. There was a problem in the estimate time for a particular task as one can’t work on the next task until the first one is completed and approved by the supervisor. Some tasks require special skills and new hired students may not have all the skills related to printing and binding. CSU wants a produce a template for job orders which will include all the possible tasks and these tasks then broken down into the different phases of the work. In the receive order phase the customer representative should check and verify all the required information needed and if the customer representative found any problem in the checking and in verification can be resolved by contacting the professor. Then there are different phases like plan order phase, production phase and the manage production phase. In the plan order phase, the work is planned, estimate and assign to the production staff. The production phase and managing production phase are work simultaneously, in the production phase, permissions are acquired, content is converted and the proof of the eBook is produced and then the quality assistant check it and make sure that it is ready for production. In the managing production phase a supervisor will track progress, work assignments and the cost for each eBook.
Ans1- Standard printing process can be carried out in mass quantity after getting approval from the supervisors but the customized eBook is something which is produced on the demand of the client. As in this case the professors want something specific in the eBook. Customized eBook is something which is made according to clients demand. There are several characteristics which are responsible for this to make a project like in this order there are different requirements from different professors which must be needed to complete and deliver within the time to the university.
