Draw an empty IPO model
My internship took place in an innovation and engineering consulting firm, mostly active in the environment and the water treatment sectors. This kind of company sells services, and I was in the sales department. I was a stakeholder in the core business, because I was a part of the sales process, which is one typical operational process that creates the primary value stream and generates profit.
However, I also took part in the HR process, which is a supporting process. As it is mentioned in its name, it supports the core processes but does not generate profit.
As a reminder, operations are input – transformation – output processes. (IPO model)
In my case, I think that, depending on my HR or sales mission, the processes were different.

- For the global HR Mission in the company I worked for, the inputs are resumes, CVs and internal databases, or professional social networks (e.g. LinkedIn).
- The transformation occurs with phone calls, prequalifications on the phone and interviews.
- The output is the job filled.
- The feedback part is composed of the employees’ satisfaction review, the job performance rating and the employees’ assessment.
However, as my stay in the company was very short and my main function was sales, I didn’t really have had an insight (eu un apercu) of the Feedback part. But I used to look for adequate profiles regularly, look upon CVs, set up and assist to interviews, etc… Moreover, in order to best achieve my missions, I also used the HR part of the ERP e-business application.
