Copper Mine Survivors after Collapse
The miners in Cilli suffered a significant hardship while they were trapped for almost
four months deep in the mines. Nevertheless of becoming well known after surviving the mine
collapse, these individuals life has not been easy. Many of these miners still have not gathered up
confidence to resume work again. While others are surviving by farming and selling there
produce on the streets, driving cabs or doing minor jobs. There are a handful of these miners who
have gotten into public speaking. Although, the fame and money was at its best but this was not
guaranteed. Overtime this form of income and lifestyle would deteriorate.
In 2007, an explosion in San Jose was reported to have killed several workers. The
assumptions were made that the mine should not have reopened without a proper escape method
set in place. The other discussion that was brought up was about the families and relatives of
these victims. How will the family react to the collapse of the mine reported by media? How
was the company or the proper authority going to answer the questions in a judicial manner?
The most potential needs of the miners family will be in receiving the message about the incident
and how they will cope with it. The need for support and counseling in making sure that their
loved one is alive and will be with them when rescued. The family needs to be fully supportive
of the miner’s mental capability of dealing with this unfortunate incident. This feelings are
similar to the ones faced by our military men and women. It is referred to as post traumatic
syndrome. Similar to the military workers the miners here face distress, emotional and physical
stress, unable to sleep and compromises in relationships.
The potential need of the company’s employees when receiving a message will be if they
will still be able to keep their job after they are rescued. Or will the company provide and help
with coping with this incident. The protocol that must be taken prior to or after communication is
delivered is to ensure that it was received
