Group Behavior In Organizations
Week One Discussion 1
More than ever, groups and teams are responsible for executing tasks in the workplace. Take a position on the following statement: All organizations should use the group structure as the basic building block for designing and organizing jobs.
My Position: I could agree that most organizations could use the group structure as the basic building block for designing and organizing jobs, but it is not necessary for ALL of them.
Reasoning: Team work within a business is never a bad thing. However, sometimes it does not work and things do not go in the direction they should. The diversity of the group will basically determine the tone of the group as well as who will do what within the group. After the “storming” period, this is when things begin to ease and you begin to get things done. Our book says that as a result in part of less "storming," more unity, and the stability achieved through shared norms, the group begins to achieve its goals (performing) (Losh, 2011). If for some reason things are still not running efficiently you either have to resituate the group and see if someone could perform better in a different position or refill the position in the group with someone else. Once everyone in the group is in sync, everything will run smoothly and the result will be worth all the stress.

Week One Discussion Two
Assume that you are part of a research team examining work groups in the organization to determine factors that enhance or inhibit group productivity. Identify what factors you would examine in your research and provide a rationale for your choice.
Generic Organization
For this assignment I will use my position as head lab technician for my current job.
Factors for Examination
- The first thing I would research would be the effectiveness of each member of my team. I would see where the strengths and weaknesses were. Not all employees put out there best work and we need to weed these employees out to find out the problem and what needs to be done about it. It may be that they need to be assigned a different task or that they would be better in a different department.
- Another area I would focus on is how much properly tested and finished product was being put out by each member of my tech team. This will help realize who could use more training or who is just slacking.
