This course is concerned with the formulation of business policies and strategies. It attempts to integrate knowledge acquired in other courses in the M.B.A. program. It considers factors that must be taken into account in determining the mission and strategic objectives of an organization. It also focuses on the design and implementation of strategy to achieve organizational objectives, taking into account external and internal factors and constraints.
The course is a combination of theoretical discussion and case approach. The theoretical part provides a framework for analysis and formulation of policies and strategy. Cases are the application of theory to real situations. A number of different firms in a diverse group of industries is discussed in the course. The emphasis of the course is on decision-making.
The text book used is Crafting and Executing Strategy, by Thompson, Strickland, and Gamble, (TS) 19th Edition. There will also be supplementary readings, including Harvard Business School (HBS) materials. Finally, it is expected that every student will keep up with the current development in the business environment by reading The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Fortune, and The Harvard Business Review.knowledge acquired in other courses in the M.B.A. program.
