Zappos Current Event

Zappos is an online retailer whose primary selling base is shoes, but in 2007 extended their list of stock to include apparel, handbags, eyewear, watches, and children’s products. Zappos was founded in 1999 and based in Henderson, Nevada. As of November 2009, Zappos operates as a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. (Wikipedia, 2013).
For this paper, I will analyze a case study based on an article titled, “Secured Lender,” written about recruiting outside the box at Zappos. The case study analysis covers leadership and motivation within Zappos, with focusing in on specific questions pertaining to the article on Zappos recruiting method. Questions to be analyzed for this case study are as follows; would I consider working for Zappos? Why or why not? What are Zappos’ ten core values? What impact do they have on the corporate culture? What are two kinds of interviews a prospective employee will experience at Zappos? Why must an employee pass both interviews before being hired? Finally, what is “the offer” and what is its purpose?
In order to analyze the first two series of questions, we need to understand what motivation is. “Motivation results from a set of forces that energize, direct, and sustain behavior. Forces of motivation can either push or pull an individual within an organization.” (Hitt, 2012, p.261). Push forces for an individual include his/her needs, attitudes, and goals. Pull forces are components of the job and work situation. (Hitt, 2012, p.261). Another aspect of motivation is that the values and attitude employees bring to the work environment can greatly affect their motivation. (Hitt, 2012, p. 262).
So based on my Zappos research, I would definitely work for Zappos in a heartbeat! Zappos seems to have a great respectful working environment, happy people, and seems to have lots of opportunity for growth.
