Before I went to university, I always pictured myself studying in a foreign country and being surrounded by a totally different culture. To me, an exchange experience does not only serve as an eye-opener to me, but it also helps to shape me into a more independent person.
1. Broadening horizons
Adapting to a totally different environment is a challenge; nevertheless, this is one of my reasons for applying for an exchange. I went to a six day study tour to China last year. Although it may seem too short to be beneficial, I gain a lot from the trip. In the past, "broadening my horizons" was just one of my cliché in English composition; now they mean reality to me. By meeting local people and learning their culture, a lot of insight can be gained in the process of trying to understand their way of thinking. This open-mindedness and the ability to communicate with different people are essential for future work.
2. Furnishing language skills
I would love to go to a European country, preferable France. I am very interested in foreign languages and have been taking French courses in CUHK. Going to France gives me an opportunity to communicate with many native speakers there and assimilate into their culture. I believe nothing could improve one's language ability more effectively than immersing oneself in that country.
Exchange offers me an opportunity to go outside Hong Kong and gain invaluable survival skills. I hope that this would form one of the most unforgettable experiences in my life.
