Importance Of Diversity
Everyone has his or her own outlook on life such as where and who he or she wants to live, and why he or she chooses this way of life. To decide where to live is not easy, especially in a country that is not your original country. Some people like to live with people who are different from them in their culture, traditions, and customs. However, other people prefer to live with people who have similar traits. According to the essay “People Like Us” by David Brooks, “the mere existence of this hidden world of fashion is a slap to the fundamentalist regime. During President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's first term, the mullahs tried unsuccessfully to stamp out Western fashion influences by arresting hundreds of women for wearing manteaux deemed too short, showing too much hair, or even choosing overly colorful dresses (55).” Clearly, however, if a woman does not dress the way she is supposed to, there can be issues. I strongly believe that we need diversity in our life even though it is difficult for some people because the diversity is a part of the life and we should search for ways to be encouraged by the diversity. We must face this diversity whether we want to or not in our lives. Diversity is important for all culture in the world because the areas in which there is rich diversity, allows for all kinds of people.
However, sometimes our lives are leading us to the things we did not expect so we must be prepared to face them. Diversity is one of the things that must be faced in our lives. Facing diversity makes us stronger. In the essay “The downside of diversity”, Jonas Michael says, ”It has become increasingly popular to speak of racial and ethnic diversity as a civic strength. From multicultural festivals to pronouncements from political leaders, the message is the same: our differences make us stronger.” We believe that every person has their own personality and not all personalities are compatible with each other. A smart personality knows how to deal with all different kinds of personalities and therefore, is more likely to be flexible to accept diversity. For example, when I came to the United States I did not have friends and I spent a lot of time with myself because my husband was busy and I had to let him study. I tried to find some friends to spend my time with; however, I was thinking, do I look for a friend from my country or friends from the United States? I decided to make friends from both because I need all of them: I need some friends from my country to feel comfortable here and have someone who understands me because they have the same culture as me. On the other hand, I need to make some American friends because I have to learn the English language and know the American culture. This diversity of friends was at first not in my intention, but life brought it to me. I found that American friends are different from me. They have more freedom and no control for their deal. In addition, they do what they want and when they make friends, can be friends with any gender. These are distinctly American qualities. In my country, I am controlled by tradition and religion in everything I want to do. I also can only make female friends, not male friends. At the beginning, I found this interesting to watch but now I find myself acting more like their and it is easier for me to make friends. We must be open to everything, so we must accept the diversity of relationships and we learn to love it.
