In Inherit the Wind, Robert E. Lee and Jerome Lawrence use words and actions to show the conflicting battle between religion and Evolution. The townspeople of Hillsboro are ignorant about religion and reluctant to accept how the world has changed. This is why religion seems unfair. The characters seem too overzealous and it puts religion in a bad light. The townspeople act almost foolishly when it comes to religion, and the way that they are won over by Evolution makes the characters come off as fickle and unrealistic.
Religion is portrayed unfairly in the book by the authors. The townspeople of Hillsboro are made out to be very ignorant about religion. They are not open to any other possible ideas about how the world was created or any other book besides the bible. At the beginning of the play, the people seem almost fanatic about religion and act overzealous. Because of this, religion seems like a joke because of how biased the townspeople are.
During the trial, religion is put on trial and completely torn apart by Drummond. He makes the bible seem foolish and that it cannot be taken seriously. Religion is portrayed unfairly here because of how ridiculous Drummond makes it sound. In the trial, the reader can see just how closed off to the world the people of Hillsboro seem. Also, Drummond is witty and sarcastic and wins over the audience. Brady, representing religion and the bible, looks like a fool when he is being questioned. At first, he has a cocky attitude, which is another example of how followers of religion are ignorant. As the trial goes on and Drummond gains the upper hand, Brady doesn't seem to have any answers can't respond to Drummond's questions.
At the end of the trial, Brady is so stressed out about the trial between religion and Evolution that, basically, he dies. He lost all of his supporters, which was another reason he was stressed. So even though Brady won the case, religion still lost. Religion was put
