Gone with the Wind, quoted to be the best movie ever made, is an exhilarating tale of the American Civil War, the New South and the Reconstruction era. During the Civil war, the Southern states seceded from the Union and formed the New South. Different family-owned plantations were common throughout the South. The two portrayed in the movie were Tara Plantation and Twelve Oaks Plantation. The O’Hara Family of Atlanta, Georgia owned Tara. They were a very wealthy family of Irish origin who took pride in the South and were eager to go to war with the North. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald O’Hara had three beautiful daughters: Suellen, Carreen and Scarlett. They are all beautiful young ladies who each hope that they will one day find their beau. Scarlett, the main character, is the eldest of the three and reasonably the boldest and most outgoing of the group, although she is not fond of going to war with the North. She has a deep connection with the plantation and likes to see to it that things go her way. The various gentlemen of Atlanta adore her and Scarlett truly enjoys their attention. But, she is also secretly and madly in love with Ashley Wilkes, whose family owns Twelve Oaks Plantation. Mr. John Wilkes, also a wealthy southerner, has three children: Ashley, India, and Honey. Another important character that joins the group at Twelve Oaks is Melanie Hamilton Wilkes, Ashley’s fiancé and cousin. She is a kind and gracious woman who throughout the war supports and loves Scarlett as a sister during times of happiness and sickness. The last main character, and probably one of the most important, is Rhett Butler. He, like Scarlett does not want to go to war, but although he is a Northerner, he is not fond of the Yankees and spends most of his time down South. A retired captain, Rhett is a very wealthy man and has quite a reputation in South Carolina.
