In the mid-20th century People realized that automobiles could be a major component for transportation. Therefore, motorization started to grow significantly and gave people the option to buy bigger houses among nature in rural areas, which lead to urban sprawl. Urban sprawl is defined as the mass development and growth of the city from its centre to periphery areas. Urban sprawl and motorization has created two serious issues both ecological and social. Ecological issues such as global warming, which is caused by emissions that are created by transportation and the high energy consumption of houses. Moreover, land conversion is another ecological issue that is caused by the degradation of farmlands and forests, so roads and houses could be constructed. Secondly, social polarization, transport injustice and public health are the three main factors of social issues and that is created by urban sprawl and modernization. Different solutions have been offered to prevent and fix these issues. Sustainable urban planning is one of the solutions that should be processed through government policies, creating mass public transportation is one of the examples. Furthermore, technology is another solution offered by business groups, which is by developing new energy sources such as clean coal and nuclear energy or by sequestering carbon. However different ideas have been proposed as a solution to these issues, which one of these solutions would more helpful is the main focus. This essay will describe government policies and technological solutions to overcome motorization impacts. Then it will examine which solution is the most appropriate approach to these issues. Although technology has been presented as a solution, the government solutions are more appropriate and ideal. This essay focuses on global warming and public health
Global warming is one of the key main factors of environmental issues, which is caused by urban sprawl and modernisation. Global warming is mainly caused by greenhouse gas emitted by urban sprawl and modernization operations such as, high amount of non-eco-friendly transportations and the cooling and the heating of specious houses. Technology could be addressed as a solution to global warming, finding new energy sources as a replacement for fossil fuel is a target for technological solutions. Business group choose technological development as their solution which will decrease or sequester greenhouse gas emissions, and new energy sources that could be as rich and cheap as fossil fuels but eco-friendly [Gonzales 2005]. However technology is offered as a solution, it is not appropriate for a short term solution and harms the environment by its own elements. New energy sources have not been created yet and the ones that have harm the environment in different forms. For example hydrogen could be one of the potential energy sources however, it is not that efficient to replace fossil fuel and the process of manufacturing of it will
