Defining Public Relations Paper

Public Relations could be a good or bad experience for any company out in the world depending on what kind of spin the company might throw to a given situation. Companies want to maintain the front of being a well run oiled machine; however there are circumstances and situations that have the possibilities of throwing a company into a tailspin. A personal definition of public relations could be conceived as a company whom are trying to maintain a healthy positive image to all the public. While doing this the company must at the same time do what is necessary to spin or downplay any negative connotations about the company or anyone a part of that particular company.

One of the first definitions found from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) states that “Public relations helps our complex, pluralistic society to reach decisions and function more effectively by contributing to mutual understanding among groups and institutions. It serves to bring private and public policies into harmony” (Official ¶1). Another definition found through a management help website states “Public relations includes ongoing activities to ensure the overall company has a strong public image. Public relations activities include helping the public to understand the company and its products. Often, public relations are conducted through the media, that is, newspapers, television, magazines, etc. As noted above, public relations is often considered as one of the primary activities included in promotions” (McNamara ¶5). Comparing these two different statements one can clearly see that the first definition is worded in a way just like a marketing plan. The definition
