Sleep and Dream Log

Keep a one week diary of your sleep and dreaming patterns, using the sleep diary found at http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/sleep-diary.

1) Record when you go to bed and when you get up, noting approximately how long it took you to fall asleep.

2) Record whether you wake up in the middle of the night, how many times and for how many minutes.

3) Note the total number of hours you slept during the night.

4) When you wake up for the day, rate the night’s sleep as “refreshed,” “somewhat refreshed,” or “fatigued.”

5) Note anything that might have disturbed your sleep, either in falling asleep or awaking during the night (stress, environmental factors, too much caffeine, etc.).

6) Also note whether you had any naps during the day.

7) Also, keep track of caffeinated beverages consumed, when you exercised during the day, any alcohol use or heavy meals before bed, medications taken, and what you did the hour before going to sleep.

8) Research “lucid dreaming” on the web.  Take note of some recommended techniques and apply them during at least one night of your sleep.

9) Keep a notepad by your bed and record any dream activity, noting

  1. the number of dreams you remember having,
  2. how many were in color,
  3. how many you were in vs. how many you were an observer of,
  4. how many dreams had nonvisual stimuli (sound, touch, taste, movement, etc.) and note what the stimuli were,
  5. the content of the dream; describe in as much detail as possible
  6. note whether any of the dreams were recurring dreams
  7. note whether you had any lucid dreams

*Please note that if you generally have difficulty remembering your dreams, search the web for some tips on how to improve this.  Note in your paper the techniques you tried and whether you found them to be helpful or not.  I recommend writing down the dream right upon awakening from the dream (even if it is the middle of the night).

10) Please use your discretion about the details of your dreams that you share (I will be reading these, so if you wish not to include the content of a particular dream, just indicate that on the log).
