Motivation Plan
When leaders show a positive attitude about a mission or a project, the employees show an increased desire to perform their jobs to reach their goals. The challenge comes when the project has a long duration of time to be completed in. For example, your team leader comes to you and informs the team members that we have a month to complete the project and he/she needs to ensure that each team member can contribute to the project. The team has been given guidelines and timelines that need to be met. The team is discouraged that they only have a month to do the project in. By removing the team’s discouragement that is the first task of the team leader. The next task is to increase the team’s motivation, satisfaction, and performance necessary to complete the project on time. In order to accomplish this, the team leader must evaluate each of the team members DISC assessment in order to develop an effective motivational plan.
A leader must develop a plan encompassing the team’s motivation, satisfaction, and performance. It is essential that the plan includes both the team leader and team member’s perceptions to ensure that all of the viewpoints have been incorporated into the plan for positive influence.
According to Robbins and Judge (2013), “Motivation is the process that accounts for an individual’s intensity, directions, and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal.” (p. 202) Satisfaction is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as the “fulfillment of a need or want” and Performance is defined as the “fulfillment of a claim, promise, or request”. Motivation, satisfaction, and performance are important aspects that a leader must have with his/her team members as each of these aspects defines the success or failure of the team as individuals or as a group. If a leader has positive influence within their control, then they will be able to increase the team’s motivation, satisfaction, and performance.
A leader can leverage a variety of tools in developing and evaluating the team’s motivation, satisfaction, and performance. One of those tools is the DISC assessment. By using the DISC assessment, the team leader will be able to see how each of the team member’s attitudes, emotions, personalities, and values differ from one another. Other tools that can be used would be employee surveys, performance evaluations, and team building sessions which will provide a positive and efficient work environment.
Personalities
Performance is the easiest of the three aspects to evaluate and reward because many organizations have a certain set of tasks and performance guidelines that are supposed to be followed. Motivation is the hardest aspect to evaluate and reward because the team leader has to trust that the team members will exhibit their motivations. One tool that a team leader can use is the DISC Platinum Rule Behavior Style Assessment provided by Dr. Tony Alessandra.
Learning Team C has multiple personality types that would determine a person’s internal motivation. Bruce would be considered a Pioneer. That specific motivation is in the Dominance Square of the DISC assessment. A Pioneer is someone who likes being in a position to direct and redirect task accomplishments. A Pioneer tends to delegate authority and they strive for results from the need to be in charge. A Pioneer tends to focus more on the future than on either the present of the past. They are driven by a quest for accomplishments so that they can avoid boredom.
