Reflective learning journal
I have been worked for Gap Inc for one year. It is an American multinational clothing and accessories retailer which was founded in 1969. I worked in the central branch which located in 31 of queens road and my position is part time sales assistant. I was assigned to the ladies’ wear department. It is a challenging work since I have learned some skills and knowledge from the work, the diversity of work duties enriches me very much.
First of all, it is a challenging job that I do not have any spare time for taking rest during the working time. For the retail company, it is a non-stoppable process that when the shop is in operation, you cannot stop for a while since the show is on, you have the duty to responsible for the job and cannot tell your customers that you are taking rest when you are in the floor, therefore, everyone is needed to pay efforts in their own duty. However, it is possible that you could take rest in the staff lounge.
Product knowledge
In a clothing retail company, salespersons are necessary to have certain product knowledge to answer customers’ enquiries and to provide mix and match suggestion to them. Gap Inc provides some product knowledge through training in huddle meeting and WhatsApp group in mobile phone. I have been learned many different types of cutting, materials and mix and match suggestion from the training, and it helps me to be confident to present in front of the customers.
Multitasking skill
Multi-tasking skills are required for the employees. For example, it is possible that an employee working on the cash desk is describing the exchange and refund policies to the customers, bagging and packaging goods at the same time. Another example is that the salesperson may need to help more than one customers looking for the products in the warehouse and also look for the other products for restocking. I have been trained to be a multitasking salesperson since it is not hard to see more than one customer inquiries me when I am working on the floor.
Communication skill
Since the store is located in the Central, there is not hard to meet the guests who come from different countries. Except for the local people, most of the guests are American, Chinese and Korean. Therefore, all of the employees are required to be able to speak in English and Mandarin. It is a good opportunity that i can train up my English as well as Mandarin speaking skills.
Social skill
It is an interesting job if you were happy to meet new friends because you will have many chances to meet different people and you may need to cooperate with them. For example, due to the variety of job duties, it is possible that you need to change the position that you are staying, and you are required to communicate and cooperate with other employees from different department to accomplish the job task.
