STUDY PLAN
My reason for majoring in Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is because I want to be good at every business aspect, before specializing in the ones those interest me the most, which are finance and accounting. I want to learn everything from finance, marketing, operation, personnel, to strategic management, on top of having a set of excellent transferable skills. My ultimate future goal is to become a successful global CEO, and when it comes to building a business, I have to wear a lot of hats. Therefore, I believe that doing a BBA will prepare myself with the essential skills I need to achieve my goal.
I could spend all day long reading business blogs and watching business videos because this field always makes me curious. Why do businesses exist? Are all businesses violent and merely seek for profit, or are they really want to serve a purpose? How they differentiate themselves when there are thousands of competitors out there? How they use financial statements to make a crucial decision? Why should they treat the society and environment ethically when doing so is too costly? What quantitative and qualitative factors they would consider when deciding on a risky investment?
When I watch a business talk conveyed by Professor Alex Edmans, I got to know about Costco Wholesale Corporation management who takes corporate social responsibility (CSR) up to another level, not like how other supermarket companies would normally do. During American major public holidays like Thanksgiving and Labor Day, shopping at Costco would not happen. Costco’s management values its employees so much that it believes that they should spend their holidays with family. Is Costco sacrificing tons of its potential profit by doing so? Not really because through two-quarters of its fiscal 2017, Costco has reported $1.06 billion in profit. Through the talk, I learned so many things from two different people; from the speaker himself, and from the businesses in context. That was how I noticed that many people in the business field are truly incredible, and decided that I want to be in this field.
Based on that video, I got an insight on how Professor Alex did his 4 years research to prove that companies who treat their workers better, do better. For him to come out with his final conclusion, there was a lot of evidence needed to be gathered, various factors needed to be controlled, and every single statement was just too questionable and debatable. The fact that he could explain everything very thoroughly made me amazed. Like him, I also want to deliver my business findings and ideas to the world through my meaningful writings and speeches, which I hope would open people’s eyes and minds.
