I had first seen this movie back in high school and I had a good laugh and a great time-pass, enjoying the histrionics of songs and dances of Rancho, Farhan, Raju and the rest of the cast. I was then among the many movie goers who viewed the film just as entertainment or escape from their daily activities and sometimes even from their lives. I considered myself to be entertained but not watching the film for something to be understood or pondered on. I have watched it several times more and have seen just a bit of its social relevance.
However, when I had to watch it again to prepare this reaction paper, I had to put on the mindset of watching the movie not just from an entertainment side but had to view it from one who wants to get something from it. I had to look for things that would make me appreciate the director’s work, to see it as a profound art that will make me to think and ask questions about myself and others. It was then that I have seen and felt the underlying message of the movie. I still had a hilarious time but I began to see the deep meanings attached to the dialogues and I saw the social relevance and the message of the movie. The film takes a satirical look at social issues that are prevalent not just in India, but through the rest of the world.
The film revolves around the friendship of three college boys: Farhan (the narrator of the story), an aspiring but frustrated photographer who was forced by his father to take up engineering; Raju, a student who is pressured to pull out his family from poverty; and Rancho, an intelligent and passionate student who helps the people around him, inspiring them along the way. Rancho is a happy go lucky student who stands apart in his belief that the education system must consist of a learning structure which should free a student’s creativity and also to build their very foundation of a future.
