Personal Learning Paper -2
The course of organizational behavior helped me to learn and discover many new things about myself that influence my perception, behavior and attitude while reacting to a particular situation. I was unaware of many basic things and this course has helped me to enhance my overall personality. I could relate to very well to the different theories of organizational behavior which were taught in class. My industry experience prior to joining the program proved beneficial. Otherwise I would have just crammed the theories and reproduce in exam. It is interesting to know that there is actually a whole lot of science behind the things we go through in our organizations every day and if understood properly it might fulfill the dream of a fun workplace.
One of the important things I learnt is that perception is one’s unique interpretation of situation and it might be different from reality. In the class we were shown a movie “Eye of the beholder” and I realized that we should not create a perception about others because the reality may be different. It depends on which side of the situation you are and under what lights do you want to see a situation unfolding. When we evaluate a person or a situation we need to be careful about our perception as it can change the meaning and create misunderstanding. We should understand that there can be different viewpoints on the same subject. Also our perception towards a situation and our capabilities can make the situation easy or difficult. I learned that we need to have balanced perception of risks and rewards involved in a situation as a balanced perception is important to become a people’s person, an effective leader, an objective decision maker and in turn a better manager. Studying halo and horn effects concept was an eye opener. In life many times I had experienced this phenomenon but I never realized the effects of this on my decision making process, evaluations and capabilities. The MBTI test showed me that I have the ESTJ personality i.e the manager type personality. I was delighted and inspired to see that I had personality traits of famous leaders. This exercise also helped me to know the personality characters of my classmates. A connection was established between all the classmates as the traits given by the test helped us to know each other better. The Big Five Locators assessment showed me that I am resilient, extrovert, focused and a good negotiator which I feel completely matches my personality. I learned the skills which I lacked and the skills I need to develop to become an effective manager.
I also learned that attitude plays a major role in a person’s success and it also differentiates the extraordinary from the ordinary. When a problem comes in front of people, some see it as an obstacle while others see it as an opportunity to do something new, gain a new experience and rise to the next level and this rise in level prepares them to take even tougher challenges in future. Coming to my attitude I always try to have the right attitude towards a situation because I believe it’s our attitude that makes the situation positive or negative. I am always open for suggestions and improvement which help me to become a better person and I always try to look on both positive and negative side of a situation before making a decision. Learning more about attitude in detail, I understood that each individual possesses particular characteristics, nature and attitude which make an important part of a person’s personality. Our attitude is the way we evaluate people, objects, events and ideas. Attitude can be derived from our logics, emotions and behavior and it decides a way in which a person will behave, react and take decisions in a particular situation. It can also be put that our perception and conditioning majorly creates our attitude towards anything. I always have a good attitude towards people and I do my best to not judge the people. Attitude also influences our reply to any stimulus. In Work place also the attitude of a person affects the performance in delivering a particular work. The attitude of a person could be positive or negative and is subject to change very quickly based on what kinds of commitments he/she has with the company.
