The Helping Process
The profession of Human Services involves working with the public in areas of a mental, physical, emotional, economical, and social state. This profession involves helping people in areas of their lives that need help. The process of being able to help the person involves three phases. These phases are assessment, planning, and implementation. The majority of the clients require support and structure to reach their objective. The Human Service Professional or case manager is the person responsible for collecting the information needed for the specific needs of the person, and implementing the action plan. It is very important to know that documentation and report writing are among the most important tools during this process. The Human Service profession is very rewarding, and it is for people that care about others and helping them live healthier happier lives.
The first phase of the helping process is the assessment phase. This involves meeting with the person, making contact, finding out what the problems are and gathering information. This is done by interviewing the person and asking the proper questions to help the person solve their issues. General questions about the person are asked such as name, age date of birth and family background. The next step is defining the problem. After the problem is defined then, the case manager begins to gather information from outside agencies such as school, hospitals, clinics and employers if any.
The second phase is the planning phase. During this phase, the case manager has already determined the problems and the needs of the client. The case manager begins to put forth a plan for services needed to help the client reach their goal. It is important to note that during the entire process of the helping phase the input and participation of the client is required. The client and the case manager must continue to work together to find the right assistance. The client must feel comfortable and willing to accept the assistance offered by the case manager.
The third phase and final phase of the helping process is the implementation phase. This is when the planning phase is put into action. The client begins to receive services from the outside agencies, and the case manager is responsible for overlooking the progress of the client. The case manager makes sure that the client is comfortable and happy with the services being received. If not, then proper changes are made.
It is important to note that case review, report writing, and documentation is extremely important during the entire time of the helping process. The case manager is responsible for documenting the case properly every time there is client contact. As well as writing reports when needed. The case must be kept in and organized documented order in case a supervisor or outside agency reviews the case record. This is the way the case manager assists the client and protects them in the case of an audit.
