Mid semester essay

Through popular culture and current events in the United States one can infer that diversity is what makes America exclusive in a way, because with diversity comes a vast range of different ideas and talents. Due to the fact that no one is truly the same in any way, shape or form, but instead have similarities that bring people together. Nevertheless, diversity is a trait one is received at birth and, not gained. The top two themes that are talked about in this day and age when it comes down to diversity in America for me personally are race and ethnicity.

In society today, most people view diversity as a good thing because it gives people the chance to experience different things outside of what they are normally accustomed to. It is sometimes a tricky thing to use and understand because it has both negative and positive effects on society such as education, violence and employment. People have to dig deep to figure out what exactly the effect will be in the end and be patient to wait and see. Diversity is not always just what background you come from but is any unique difference between human beings. Diversity includes physical appearance, religious belief, and race but your opinions and thoughts and the impact they make on society are also part of diversity. A great song that I believe ties in with this important detail is called, “Beautiful People” by Chris Brown. This song basically is Chris just explaining how everyone is beautiful in some way and no matter what you should embrace yourself for who you are, because your true beauty lies within you. He continues talking about how you should not let anyone bring you down and to take your time to just live your life as free as possible.

The example that explores my two themes is a newspaper article, in which they go into an in-depth look at how there is something called "white racial privilege." The article then states that, “Although African-Americans' and Hispanics' participation in higher education has been growing faster than white students, the report found that whites are over-represented in the nation's 468 most selective and well-funded colleges and are increasingly vacating the less selective open-access, two- and four-year colleges, which admit a majority of their applicants. On the other hand, African-American and Hispanic students are concentrated at 3,250 of these open-access colleges.”( Bidwell) This is making it clear that even though the minorities of the U.S. are getting accepted to open-access colleges, they are still not represented in the selective and well-funded colleges and is basically making a privileged white class. The in class reading that I believe

Diversity can bring curiosity out of anyone by being introduced to different people and cultures, a student may want to be educated more about a certain culture which can give them an in-depth look on how and
