1. Introduction

Leadership and management are of global importance, so they can compete effectively in an international economy. It can be considered that the role of the leader and how the style of leaders can active their follows has a great effect. It highlights that there has two specific kinds of leadership: transactional and transformational behaviors (Burns 1978; Bass and Bass 2008). These two styles of leadership are distinct concepts with differing effects on followers’ behaviors (Bass 1985; Judge and Piccolo 2004). On the other hand, organisation always wants to achieve a series of goals through their management. As a result, an organisation often tries to use management tools, for example, quality management system or knowledge management practice. It has been shown that organisational performance is estimated to be related to the usage of those two tools (Hung et al. 2010; Lam et al. 2011; Huynh and Lin 2013). These leads leadership and management become one of basis of an organisation’s success.

This article will explain the meanings of leadership and management. It will talk about whether leadership or management can exist without formal management authority. The relationship between personality and effective leadership will be discussed. Furthermore, the ways of leading/managing which related to the context that people are in and to the type of people they are managing will be discussed. Finally, some learning experience will be shared which is going through on this module.
