The dictionary describes emotional intelligence as “The ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others.” In reality, it has several other components that come into play such as, emotional awareness or the ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking. And problem-solving or the ability to manage emotions, including regulating your own emotions. Without emotional intelligence, a person is unable to identify their emotions and control them, which can lead to frustration, loss of friendships, and beginning many arguments. Emotional Intelligence is an important trait to have to maintain relationships, have a healthy social experience, and may determine how happy you feel about your life.
An emotional skill that I possess, is the ability to admit when I am wrong or when I made a mistake. This skill is important because, people who do not possess the ability to admit when they are wrong, are hard to get along with as they always believe they are right. I am not afraid to stand up and take responsibility for my mistakes. They say, “to err is human”, everyone makes mistakes. But I but you have to take responsibility for them because in the end we learn from our mistakes and without them, we would never learn. We hear about Einstein creating the theory of relativity, we do not hear about the mistakes he made in order to achieve this goal. What is important is that he learned from them and continued his research from there. This shows that in the end, your mistakes do not matter, life goes on, you are remembered for your achievements, not your failures.
Awareness of emotional skills makes me a better citizen because it allows me to be more understanding towards people and be able to control my own emotions.
