Cell phone
Name:
Institution:
Making a call while driving
I believe that making a conversation on a cell phone while driving is a bad practice that can cause death and loss of property. According to Smilek et al. (2013), individuals tend to be selectively attentive to the information that is appealing to them. This implies that when they are making a call when driving, the information on the phone may be more interesting, and the driver may find himself ignorant of the road events hence causing an accident. Further, people cannot multitask when two events are occurring at the same time (Daniel, 2013). For instance, driving at the same time taking a call could result in the driver attending to one of the events while disregarding the other, and he/she is unlikely to be distracted by the unattended task.
People are sometimes affected by in-attentional blindness whereby they fail to attend to events that they are expected to oversee (Daniel, 2013). For instance, a driver can concentrate in recognizing information pattern so as to understand the conversation but fail to see and take action on the changes of traffic lights. Such as action can lead to overrunning of pedestrians crossing the road. Smilek et al. (2013) also noted that attention is limited. According to his capacity model, attention can only support limited amount of activity hence attending to two activities may be limited (Daniel, 2013). In conclusion, the rules that ban taking a call while driving are justified and should be implemented to the latter. The rules are meant to safeguard people and properties from attention related dilemma. People who oppose the laws just because they are not victims should be aware that it is by luck, and they should stop such behaviors to minimize chances of accidents.
