Summary of Philosophy of Human Services
It is my belief that the profession of Human services is a necessary component of society in order for it to function stably. I believe that our role is to help individuals function to the best of their ability in their everyday lifes. Human Service workers must be prepared to assist and serve clients in a manner that is nonjudgmental, moral and ethical, and competent.
Being nonjudgmental insures that we respect the clients as individuals who are able to participate in planning their own lives and solving their own problems. As human services professionals, you have to refrain from imposing your own beliefs and cultural values on clients. I believe that all humanity should be treated with a degree of dignity and respect, especially those who can't advocate for themselves and need others to stand up for them. With having morals and being eithcial; you work and advocate for clients’ best interests. I would do for any clients what they would do for themselves.
In human services I will come in contact with many ethical dilemmas, and I know that the number one important thing is to do what is in the best interest of the client. In addition, I believe that privacy is valued in the relationship between client and helper. It is the professional's job to make the client feel comfortable and at ease while receiving services. At all times I will respect the client's wishes and feelings. No one wants to come to someone with a problem to be degraded and humiliated. I know that I will see many situations, some that I disagree with, but then this is where the compassion comes in. No matter what the client's needs have to be assessed and help given to them in the best possible way. If I am unable to help them, then I will do whatever possible to find the right person or agency to do it. The ability to work in a team is another quality that I posses that is truly important to the field. In human services teams and networks are built so the client can come first. Through a good support team many people can be helped in all different area.
