  7. We want our business to benefit
  8. the world. That is why we have
  9. committed to becoming forest and
  10. water positive by the end of FY20.
  11. Our aim is for responsible forestry
  12. and water management to become
  13. the norm, beyond our own supply
  14. chain. But we cannot do this alone
  15. – we need collaboration to make
  16. this happen.
  17. To become forest positive, we
  18. will contribute to ending deforestation
  19. by promoting the adoption
  20. of sustainable forestry methods
  21. across the whole industry. Through
  22. our people and planet positive
  23. strategy we commit to use only
  24. wood from more sustainable
  25. sources (currently defined as
  26. FSC™ certified or recycled wood)
  27. by 2020, and not to source wood
  28. from high conservation value
  29. forests, unless they are certified
  30. as responsibly managed.
  31. We have been working in partnership
  32. with WWF for more than
  33. a decade to increase levels of FSC
  34. certification globally and fight the
  35. illegal timber trade. So far we have
  36. increased FSC certified forest by
  37. around 35 million hectares, an
  38. area roughly the size of Germany
  39. and more than double the total
  40. area needed to supply IKEA.
  41. We continue to work on eight
  42. FSC-related projects in 10
  43. countries. We also seek the
  44. support of local NGOs, participate
  45. in policy discussions, and fund
  46. forestry education initiatives. We
  47. fund a conservation study centre
  48. in the Maliau Basin, Borneo that
  49. shares forestry research with
  50. scientists and students worldwide.
  51. And investing in our own forest
  52. operations means we can roll
  53. out our forest positive approach
  54. further, and be more confident of
  55. securing a sustainable supply of
  56. wood (see page 25 ).
  57. Being water positive is about
  58. considering water stewardship
  59. across our whole water footprint,
  60. from suppliers to customers. We
  61. are exploring ways to improve
  62. water efficiency in our operations
  63. and supply chain, supporting
  64. customers to reduce their water
  65. impact, and collaborating with
  66. other stakeholders to develop
  67. long-term improved water
  68. management.
  69. Together with WWF we have
  70. been working for many years to
  71. support farmers to reduce their
  72. water use in cotton production,
  73. which is a particularly water
  74. intensive crop. Our new projects
  75. in India and Pakistan support
  76. cotton farmers to address their
  77. water impact and many other
  78. interconnected challenges. We
  79. aim to enable farmers to improve
  80. water management practices
  81. in order to maintain or restore
  82. water resources, increase
  83. local collaboration, and ultimately
  84. secure long-term livelihoods for
  85. people and communities.
